Art Nouveau Inspired Living Room

Art Nouveau Living Room | Upper West Side, Manhattan

This living room redesign is located in a pre-war apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and was created for David and Joy, a couple in their early sixties whose children no longer live at home. The space was envisioned as an elegant yet comfortable retreat that supports daily living, reading, and intimate entertaining.

Inspired by Art Nouveau principles, the design emphasizes fluid curves, organic motifs, and fine craftsmanship. A balanced seating arrangement blends traditional silhouettes with modern comfort, while integrated storage and custom millwork provide space to display the clients’ collection of vintage art glass and ceramic vases. These nature-inspired pieces are highlighted as focal accents throughout the room.

Special consideration was given to restoring and incorporating the clients’ antique carved mahogany armchair, allowing a sentimental heirloom to anchor the space while harmonizing with the overall aesthetic. Layered lighting, including wall sconces and task lighting, ensures a warm ambiance and supports evening reading, creating a living room that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
